Christmas has always mattered in Los Angeles, and the Lakers are clearly positioning themselves to have their star ready when the spotlight hits. Right now, the signs are pointing toward Luka Doncic playing in the Christmas Day matchup against the Houston Rockets.
According to Dave McMenamin of ESPN, there’s a good chance that Luka plays on Christmas if his leg responds well.

Doncic was sidelined with a left calf contusion after exiting the Clippers game early and sitting out against Phoenix. Given his history with calf issues, the Lakers are being extra cautious in how they handle it. Still, it doesn’t appear to be serious, and they seem focused on giving him time to rest ahead of their marquee matchup.
Why Sitting Him Now Makes Sense
Calf injuries can be deceptive. One rushed return can turn a minor issue into a lingering one. The Lakers are making sure he’s good to go before he steps on the court.
From a basketball standpoint, it makes a lot of sense. Luka’s game is built on balance, deceleration, and using angles. All of those depend on the health of his lower extremities. If his calf isn’t right, then his effectiveness won’t be either.
How Luka Changes the Game
Having Luka Doncic on the floor changes everything, especially for the Lakers. The whole offense runs through him. Even at less than full strength, Doncic changes the geometry of the floor.
Houston is a young team that thrives on speed and pressure. Having Luka is important in this matchup as he is a natural pace-breaker. He walks defenders into mismatches, forces help early, and turns chaotic possessions into half-court chess. Without him, the game turns into a grind. That style of play favors the younger, more athletic team.
The Bottom Line
Christmas in the NBA is when the stars come to play. Luka Doncic has always embraced the bright lights, and it appears Lakers fans may be in line for another Christmas Day treat.
