The Lakers Could Be Shorthanded as Injury Questions Linger

The Lakers left the game against the Clippers, battered and bruised, and are now heading into the next few games with uncertainty. After a loss that already stretched the roster to its limit, Los Angeles could be shorthanded again, with multiple injuries lingering and no clear updates from the team.

Luka Doncic

The biggest question for Laker fans, of course, is Luka Doncic. He didn’t return for the second half due to a calf contusion. It was obviously affecting his game as he looked limited even before heading to the locker room. His lift wasn’t there, his shooting suffered, and he never really looked like Luka.

As of now, the Lakers haven’t given any updates or timetable, leaving open the possibility that this could cost him additional games. Given how much the offense relies on him, even a short absence will dramatically affect the team.

Marcus Smart

Marcus Smart has also been important to the team, particularly through his leadership and defense. Unfortunately, he appeared to tweak his ankle after landing awkwardly on his defender. He was able to finish the game, which is a good sign. But ankle injuries are always tricky, and there’s no guarantee that he plays the next game. He could feel better, worse, or exactly the same — and right now, there’s no clarity.

For a team already behind on defense, losing its best perimeter disruptor would be a significant setback, on top of the limited offensive firepower already available.

The Rest of the Rotation

The Lakers already had four rotation players miss their last game. There have been some positive updates on their statuses, but no clear return timetable.

Austin Reaves and DeAndre Ayton both missed the Clippers game and aren’t guaranteed to return immediately. Rui Hachimura is expected to miss several days, while Gabe Vincent remains sidelined for weeks.

Including Luka, that’s four starters that could be potentially out, and another rotation piece that is unavailable.

A Shrinking Margin for Error

Against the Clippers, the Lakers competed hard, but their lack of talent was evident in their inability to score. And basketball is all about putting the ball through the hoop. If Luka or Smart can’t go again, it adds another layer of difficulty to an already steep climb.
