It doesn’t seem like Victor Wembanyama will be leaving the San Antonio Spurs anytime soon. Still, seeds are being planted. Relationships are being built. Rob Pelinka has already established contact with Wemby’s agent, Bouna Ndiaye, potentially laying the groundwork for something bigger years down the line.
According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, Pelinka and Ndiaye met for lunch so Ndiaye could learn more about Kobe Bryant’s mindset.
“Last April, he called Los Angeles Lakers general manager and president of basketball operations Rob Pelinka, who represented Kobe Bryant for much of his career, and scheduled a lunch.”
The Lakers maintaining connections with the people around elite stars has always mattered to the franchise. History shows those relationships can become important when nobody expects them to.
The Spurs Are Built Around Wembanyama
Before Lakers fans start convincing themselves that Wemby is a future Laker, let’s step back into reality. San Antonio is one of the best situations in the NBA for a young superstar, and Wembanyama already looks like the centerpiece of the league’s future.
The Spurs have stability, patience, draft assets, and a front office that understands how to build around generational talent. More importantly, Wembanyama appears fully invested in what the organization is trying to build. At just 22 years old, he already feels like the kind of player who can dominate the league for the next decade.
Wembanyama is under contract while the Spurs are ascending. There is currently zero pressure on either side to even consider a future separation. Right now, San Antonio holds all the leverage and all the momentum. However, history has repeatedly shown that situations across the league can evolve much faster than expected.
Why This Meeting Still Matters
The interesting part of this story is not immediate trade speculation. The real takeaway is that the Lakers continue to build relationships and communication lines with influential people connected to elite players around the league. Organizations that consistently stay connected across the NBA usually position themselves better for opportunities whenever situations eventually shift.
Ndiaye reportedly reached out to Pelinka for insight into how Kobe Bryant approached development and improvement early in his career. After spending decades as Kobe’s agent, Pelinka became one of the few people who could genuinely explain how Kobe’s obsessive mindset worked.
That mindset is exactly why Wembanyama’s unusual offseason training became such a major topic recently. From training with Shaolin monks in China to focusing on flexibility and balance instead of simply adding weight, Wemby’s camp is trying to develop him differently than a traditional NBA center. Kobe was famously wired the same way, constantly searching for unconventional ways to sharpen his body and mind.
Building Relationships
For the Lakers, this is just good business.
Sometimes conversations like this lead nowhere, and sometimes they quietly become important years later when situations unexpectedly evolve. Nobody thought Shaquille O’Neal would leave Orlando, and nobody expected LeBron James to leave Cleveland the first time either.
The Spurs would probably build a wall around the Alamo before willingly letting him go anytime soon, especially given how well the organization and roster timeline align with his long-term future.
Still, for the Lakers, having that connection in place is important. In the NBA, relationships often shape the future before fans notice, so you never know what might happen in the years ahead.
