The Milwaukee Bucks are now actively seeking trade offers for Giannis Antetokounmpo following another disappointing playoff exit. While this saga can be a nuisance for the average fan, it could be an opportunity for the Lakers to get another star to play alongside Luka Doncic.
While Los Angeles may not have the cleanest trade package compared to other teams around the league, the combination of the Lakers’ global brand, championship expectations, and the presence of Luka Doncic gives them a legitimate chance to at least remain part of the conversation.
Lakers Already Showed Interest
According to Shams Charania’s latest ESPN report, the Lakers tried to trade for Giannis at the deadline and will likely continue that pursuit this offseason.
“Sources said postseason teams such as the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Boston Celtics, Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers pursued Antetokounmpo at the February deadline, and their finishes to the campaign will play a major factor in their aggressiveness to trade for him.”
For the Lakers, this is exactly the type of situation they have historically monitored aggressively. Los Angeles consistently positions itself around superstars, especially when generational ones become available. Even if the Lakers are viewed as underdogs compared to teams with larger collections of draft picks, their involvement should not surprise anyone.
Why Giannis Fits Perfectly Next To Luka
On the court, Giannis might be the best superstar to pair with Luka Doncic. Luka is already one of the NBA’s top offensive players, controlling the game with his vision and scoring. Giannis is still one of the league’s toughest players to stop when he drives to the basket.
Putting those two together would create constant pressure on opposing defenses. Luka running pick-and-rolls with Giannis as the screener would force defenders into impossible decisions: trapping Luka leaves Giannis in four-on-three situations, while collapsing on Giannis creates open shots for Luka and the rest of the offense.
The Lakers also desperately need more athleticism and defensive versatility after their playoff weaknesses were exposed this season. Giannis immediately solves many of those problems while also giving Los Angeles another superstar capable of dominating both ends of the floor. Defensively, he would restore the type of interior presence and help-side rim protection the Lakers had during the best stretches of the Anthony Davis era.
The Biggest Obstacles For Los Angeles
The difficult reality for the Lakers is that several other teams can simply outbid them in terms of assets. Franchises like the Oklahoma City Thunder, Houston Rockets, and San Antonio Spurs possess far more draft capital and young players than Los Angeles can realistically offer.
Another obstacle is Giannis’ disdain for the city of LA itself.

The Lakers would likely need Giannis himself to have genuine interest in playing for the franchise for this possibility to become realistic. The opportunity to play alongside Luka while competing for championships every season could be attractive to any superstar looking for a fresh start.
Does It Make Sense for LA?
There is also the question of roster depth after a potential blockbuster trade. Any move for Giannis would almost certainly reshape the roster entirely and leave the Lakers heavily dependent on minimum signings and veteran role players around their stars. We’ve seen throughout this year’s playoffs just how important depth is, and a trade for Giannis Antetokounmpo would almost certainly leave the Lakers with very little of it.
Still, teams rarely hesitate when a player of Giannis’ caliber becomes available because true championship windows are built around elite talent.
Lakers Expected To Stay In The Conversation
At this point, there are still far more questions than answers surrounding Giannis’ future in Milwaukee. The Bucks could ultimately decide to keep him, while another team could overwhelm the market with a stronger trade package.
The Lakers already pursued Giannis once before the deadline, and now that Milwaukee is reportedly listening to offers, Los Angeles could remain firmly in the mix as one of the league’s most intriguing potential landing spots.
