Kawhi Leonard wearing purple and gold could become a reality. The Lakers have been interested in him for some time, and if the NBA delivers a harsh punishment on the Clippers for their Aspiration scandal, there may be a path for Kawhi to finally be on the real LA team.

According to Tom Haberstroh of Yahoo Sports, the NBA could void Kawhi Leonard’s contract as part of the Clippers’ punishment for salary cap circumvention. If that happens, the Lakers would be among the teams to pursue him.

“The interesting thing on that is it provides a conundrum where I think if Kawhi Leonard is now a free agent, you’re now going to see a frenzy for his services, with the likes of the Lakers, with the likes of the Golden State Warriors or the New York Knicks.”

The Health Conversation

Any serious discussion about Kawhi Leonard has to start with his health. Over the past several seasons, knee inflammation, load management cycles, and postseason setbacks have become part of his profile. When he plays, he still looks like one of the most efficient two-way forces in basketball. The problem has not been performance; it has always been availability.

The Lakers would have to evaluate Leonard not as the 2019 Finals MVP version in isolation, but as the current version with accumulated wear.

Fit on the Court

From a schematic standpoint, the fit makes sense. He can operate within structure, punish mismatches in the mid-post, and space the floor without disrupting offensive rhythm. In postseason basketball, where possessions slow down and isolation scoring becomes more valuable, Leonard’s style translates perfectly.

Defensively, he addresses one of the Lakers’ recurring pressure points: guarding elite wings in a seven-game series. Having Leonard take the toughest perimeter assignment allows everyone else to slot into more natural roles. That matters in the Western Conference, where matchups often decide advancement.

The basketball fit is not complicated. If he’s on the floor, he raises the ceiling.

The Number Has to Be Right

If Leonard becomes a free agent because his contract is voided, emotion around the league could inflate his value. The Lakers cannot allow urgency to dictate the terms. A long-term, fully guaranteed max deal without safeguards would introduce enormous risk, especially considering his injury history.

They need to structure a contract that protects the franchise. That could mean fewer guaranteed years or incentives tied to availability. Leonard’s résumé commands respect, but contracts must reflect present realities, not past achievements. If the number is right, Leonard becomes a calculated championship swing. If the number is excessive, the risk multiplies quickly.

The Bottom Line

As of right now, Kawhi Leonard remains a Clipper, and the NBA has not issued a ruling. But if the league voids his contract, the Lakers will be presented with an opportunity. Leonard could significantly improve their championship odds if healthy. He could also tighten flexibility if the contract does not reflect the risk.

In Los Angeles, star pursuits are inevitable. Smart championship organizations separate excitement from evaluation. If Kawhi Leonard becomes available, the Lakers should absolutely explore it. They just have to make sure the price — in dollars and durability — matches the reality.
