The Los Angeles Lakers need another option behind Walker Kessler, and Dallas could provide the answer. If the Mavericks waive Moussa Cisse, the Lakers should prioritize signing him.
NBA insider Marc Stein raised the possibility of Dallas releasing Cisse to create room for Dwight Powell.
“Now would the Mavericks really release, say, center Moussa Cisse to make room for Powell? … That all seemed highly unlikely … until hearing May gush over Powell’s play. The Mavericks could also attempt to create a roster spot via trade.”
Dallas hasn’t decided to move on from Cisse yet, but it’s something to watch. If he becomes available, the Lakers could fill a need without trading away draft picks.
Walker Kessler’s Backup
The Lakers need a rim protector for when Kessler is on the bench. Their aggressive defense on the outside makes this even more important, since it can leave the basket open if opponents get past them.
Cisse would give JJ Redick another center to back up that defensive pressure. Last season as a rookie in Dallas, he averaged 4.5 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.2 blocks in only 13.9 minutes per game over 38 games. That’s solid production for a limited role.
Cisse’s main value would be in a specific role. The Lakers could have him contest shots, grab rebounds, and bring energy without needing plays run for him. He’d give the second unit another big body when they need more size inside.
Playing with Luka Doncic makes things on offense easier. By setting screens, rolling to the basket, and staying ready near the rim, Cisse could help out while the Lakers’ main playmakers run the show.
Why A Trade Is Unlikely
Both teams facing a roster crunch makes a trade difficult. Sending multiple Lakers players to Dallas for Cisse would work against the Mavericks’ goal of creating an opening for Powell, while a one-for-one exchange would not reduce either team’s roster count.
A larger deal involving another team could theoretically solve that problem, but the Lakers have little reason to force a complicated transaction. Waiting to see how Dallas handles its final roster decisions is the more sensible approach.
The Lakers should remain prepared to act, however. If Dallas waives Cisse, his rebounding and shot-blocking would make him a logical target.
A Signing Worth Creating Room For
If Cisse clears waivers, the Lakers should pursue him, even if that requires making additional cuts. With Dalton Knecht and Jaden Hardy among their potential roster decisions, Los Angeles should prioritize building a more balanced team.
Cisse would still need to prove he can produce consistently in a regular rotation. But the Lakers don’t need him to replace Kessler; they need someone who can protect the paint during his bench minutes. Cisse would be a worthwhile option for that role.
